Matthew Corbett Scott |
I have a few items of my late father's from his time in Stalag VII A 1941-1945 and I would be very happy to have these included in the Moosburg Online web site.
I recently wrote to the International Committee of the Red Cross who have supplied some very useful information regarding his incarceration during World War II.
Private Matthew Scott
Unit : 2nd Heavy A.A. Regt W/Shop R.A.O.C.
Service number : 7607351
Captured : 01/06/1941 Saloniki, Crete
Arrived at Stalag VII A on 07/07/1941
Transferred from Stalag VII A on 14/04/1943 to Stalag VIII B (later renamed Stalag 344)
Arrived at Stalag VIII B in Silesia (Poland) on 17/04/1943
During his time at this camp he worked as a miner and conditions generally were very bad.
On the 22nd of January 1945 this camp was disbanded and the prisoners marched several hundred miles in freezing conditions back into Germany on what became known as the "Lamsdorf Death March". Mortality rates were very high.
He arrived at Stalag XIII C in Bavaria on 13/03/1945 from where he was liberated by Combat Command B of the U.S. 14th Armored Division on 06/04/1945.
My father never talked about his experiences but, reading about the terrible conditions in Stalag 344 and the Death March I can now understand why.
At some time in the future I would like to make a trip to Moosburg.
