St Pius' Church in the new town

St Pius' (c. 49 kbytes) On the site of the former POW and internment camp a church dedicated to the pope St Pius X was built in 1949-50 - mainly for the growing community of German refugees in the new town. Later, the Stalag fountain was erected in a small park opposite the church.

St Pius' (c. 31 kbytes) St Pius' Church is a plain building. Its steeple above the apse has a saddle roof similar to that of the Gotic church in Thonstetten. It was built by the Moosburg architect Ludwig Hilz but designed by Friedrich Haindl who had been the leading architect in the archdiocese of Munich and Freising since the 1930s. Among others, he built churches in Arberg, Aurach, Ingolstadt, Munich, Ottobrunn, Rimsting, Schliersee and Unterreit. A Munich church for which he used the cinema of Hitler's guards on Obersalzberg burned down in 1994.
